Congruent angles

What Are Congruent Angles?

  • Congruent Angles Definition: Angles are congruent, when they have the same angle measure in degrees. It doesn’t matter if the angles are oriented differently in space or belong to different shapes –  their size must be identical.

  • Notation: Congruence is denoted by the symbol ≅. So, if angle A is congruent to angle B, we write it as ∠A ≅ ∠B.

  • Properties: Congruent angles retain the same angle measure even if the lengths of the sides of the angles are different.

what are congruent angles

Congruent Angles Examples:

Example 1:

  1. Condition: Imagine two different triangles, Triangle ABC and Triangle DEF.
  2. Identifying Congruent Angles: Suppose ∠A in Triangle ABC measures 45 degrees, and ∠F in Triangle DEF also measures 45 degrees.
  3. Conclusion: Here, ∠A ≅ ∠F, indicating that these two angles are congruent because they both have the same measure of 45 degrees.

Example 2:

  1. Condition: Consider two angles formed by different pairs of intersecting lines, say ∠X formed by lines AB and BC, and ∠Y formed by lines DE and EF.
  2. Identifying Congruent Angles: If the measure of ∠X is found to be 90 degrees, and ∠Y is also measured and found to be 90 degrees.
  3. Conclusion: We conclude that ∠X ≅ ∠Y as both have equal measures of 90 degrees, making them congruent angles.

These examples illustrate the concept of congruent angles which is crucial in various geometrical constructions and proofs. It’s important to remember that congruence strictly refers to the equality of the angles in terms of their measures, regardless of the location or orientation of the angles.
