Factoring polynomials – how to factor polynomials?





Factoring polynomials is a crucial skill in algebra that involves breaking down a polynomial into simpler polynomials (factors) that, when multiplied together, give the original polynomial. This process is key in solving polynomial equations and simplifying algebraic expressions.

Basic Steps for Factoring Polynomials

  1. Look for a common factor in all terms of the polynomial. If one exists, factor it out.
  2. For quadratic polynomials (ax^2 + bx + c), look for two numbers that multiply to ac and add up to b. Use these numbers to split the middle term and then factor by grouping.
  3. For higher-degree polynomials, try factoring by grouping, synthetic division, or special factorization formulas like the difference of squares.
  4. Remember that some polynomials are prime and cannot be factored further using integer coefficients.

Examples of Factoring Polynomials

Example 1: Factor x^2 – 9.

This is a difference of squares: x^2 – 9 = (x + 3)(x – 3).

Example 2: Factor 6x^2 + 11x – 10.

First, find two numbers that multiply to -60 (6 * -10) and add up to 11. These numbers are 15 and -4. Rewrite the polynomial as 6x^2 + 15x – 4x – 10, then factor by grouping: 3x(2x + 5) – 2(2x + 5). Finally, factor out the common term: (3x – 2)(2x + 5).

Factoring Special Types of Polynomials

Some polynomials, like perfect square trinomials or cubic polynomials, may require specific methods or formulas for factoring. Understanding different forms of polynomials can help identify the appropriate factoring technique.
