To add fractions, you need to make sure they have a common denominator (the bottom number of the fraction). If they don’t, find a common denominator by finding the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators and convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with this common denominator. Then, add the numerators (the top numbers) while keeping the denominator the same.
Example 1
Add 1/4 and 1/2.
First, find a common denominator. The LCM of 4 and 2 is 4. Convert 1/2 to an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 4, which is 2/4. Now add 1/4 and 2/4.
Calculation: 1/4 + 2/4 = (1 + 2)/4 = 3/4
Example 2
Add 2/3 and 3/5.
First, find a common denominator. The LCM of 3 and 5 is 15. Convert 2/3 to 10/15 and 3/5 to 9/15. Now add 10/15 and 9/15.
Calculation: 10/15 + 9/15 = (10 + 9)/15 = 19/15
The fraction 19/15 is an improper fraction and can be left as is or converted to a mixed number.
