To divide one fraction by another, you multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction. The reciprocal of a fraction is created by flipping its numerator and denominator. For example, the reciprocal of a/b is b/a.
Example 1
Divide 1/4 by 2/3.
First, find the reciprocal of 2/3, which is 3/2. Then multiply 1/4 by 3/2.
Calculation: (1/4) ÷ (2/3) = (1/4) × (3/2) = (1 × 3) / (4 × 2) = 3/8
Example 2
Divide 3/5 by 7/8.
First, find the reciprocal of 7/8, which is 8/7. Then multiply 3/5 by 8/7.
Calculation: (3/5) ÷ (7/8) = (3/5) × (8/7) = (3 × 8) / (5 × 7) = 24/35
The fraction 24/35 is already in its simplest form.
