To multiply two fractions, multiply the numerators (the top numbers) together and the denominators (the bottom numbers) together. The formula for multiplying fractions a/b and c/d is (a × c) / (b × d). After multiplying, simplify the fraction to its lowest terms if possible.
Example 1
Multiply 1/4 and 3/5.
Calculation: (1/4) × (3/5) = (1 × 3) / (4 × 5) = 3/20
The fraction 3/20 is already in its simplest form.
Example 2
Multiply 2/3 and 7/8.
Calculation: (2/3) × (7/8) = (2 × 7) / (3 × 8) = 14/24
Simplify 14/24 to 7/12 (dividing numerator and denominator by 2).
