The quotient is the result of a division operation. When one number (known as the dividend) is divided by another number (the divisor), the answer obtained is called the quotient. The quotient can be a whole number, a fraction in the form of one number over another, or a decimal, depending on the numbers in the division.
Quotient Formula
The basic formula for finding a quotient is: Quotient = Dividend ÷ Divisor.
Example 1: Whole Number Quotient
Find the quotient of 20 divided by 4.
Calculation: 20 ÷ 4 equals 5. So, the quotient is 5.
Example 2: Fractional Quotient
Find the quotient of 5 divided by 2.
Calculation: 5 ÷ 2 equals 2.5. The quotient can be expressed as the decimal 2.5 or as the fraction 5/2.
