Explore here concept of integers, which include the following:
- whole numbers (zero (0) and positive (counting) numbers)
- opposite to whole numbers (negative) numbers
Integers
Integers – is full set of numbers, which include positive (counting) numbers, zero and opposite to whole (negative) numbers. Check the image below for better visual understanding
Zero (0) and positive (counting) numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ….
Zero (0) and opposite to whole numbers (negative) numbers are …, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0
So, set of integers is a full set of whole (zero and positive (counting) and opposite to whole (negative) numbers, check the image below for better understanding
If we would be putting integers on the horizontal line, where the centre is Zero (0), which is neither positive, nor negative:
positive (counting) integers would be on the right side from Zero (0) – they are greater than 0
negative integers would be on the left side from Zero (0) – they are less than 0
Here are some examples:
- opposite of positive 5 is negative 5: -(5) or -5
- opposite of negative 6 is positive 6: -(-6) or 6
- opposite to 0 is 0
Absolute Value of Integer
When integers are put on the horizontal line, with the centre at 0, integer distance from 0 either to right, or left is an absolute value of an integer and it is marked with this symbol | |:
- absolute value of positive 7 is 7: |7|=7
- absolute value of negative 7 is 7: |-7|=7
- absolute value of 0 is 0: |0|=0
